The goal of formulating an effective employee relations strategy should be to facilitate better communication, dialogue and collaboration between employees and employers, essentially to build better relationships. Let's look at why investing in building better employee relations makes good business sense
- Better Employee Engagement
When
employees feel respected and valued, they will likely respond and contribute
positively. Employee engagement can be nurtured by:
Encouraging open discussion
Respecting employees opinions
Giving regular feedback and updates about the business and
individual performance.
Being open about what is expected of employees.
· Greater Employee Satisfaction
· Improved Employee Productivity
Enhanced productivity is an inevitable outcome of higher employee engagement and happiness. Positive work environments almost always result in increased outputs and better quality work. According to a review of organizational performance across businesses, companies with highly engaged employees see revenues that are more than twice as high over a three-year period.
· Higher Employee Retention
· Employee Advocacy
· Greater Employee Empowerment
Develop a Positive Employee
Relations Framework
- Set up multiple and complementary mechanisms for employee voice, including direct methods with individuals and indirect methods for collective voice, via employee representation.
- Establish structures and processes for communicating with union and non-union representatives and employees at all levels of the organisation.
- Have a system to evaluate the feedback, to ensure that people’s feedback is captured and listened to from across the different voice channels.
- Train and guide managers so they understand the organisation’s aims and practices for information and consultation, and have the skills and knowledge to promote effective employee voice.
- Ensure a positive joint working ethos is cascaded throughout the organization, so that managers at all levels approach working relationships with representatives in a constructive way and build trust.
Conclusion
Employee relations isn't just about mediating disputes or ensuring contract compliance anymore; it's about creating an environment where employees feel heard, valued, and engaged. A positive employee relations strategy can lead to higher job satisfaction and enhanced productivity.
